Cherry Trees – Planting and Care

Choose the right spot for your cherry tree;

Optimal Conditions for Planting Cherry Trees;

Cherry trees are a popular choice for homeowners who want to add beauty and shade to their property. If you’re considering planting a cherry tree, there are several factors you should take into consideration if you want your tree to flourish. From soil type and positioning to type of fertilisers and watering, it’s important to understand the optimum conditions for growing cherry trees to allow them to flourish.

Soil Type:
The best soil type for growing a cherry tree is well-drained loam. This type of soil has a good balance of clay, sand, and silt which allows water and nutrients to move freely through it. It also retains moisture better than sandy soils and has fewer drainage issues than clay soils. If your soil does not meet these requirements, consider adding organic matter such as compost or peat moss before planting the tree.

Where to plant your cherry tree?
When selecting a spot for your cherry tree, make sure it is away from other trees so that the branches do not become entangled when they reach maturity. Cherry trees prefer mild temperatures with little variation between day and night temperatures. They do not tolerate extreme heat or cold very well so they should be planted in an area that is protected from strong winds or frost pockets where possible.
Planting in an area with full sun will help ensure optimal growth as cherry trees need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive.

Additionally, apply a slow-release fertiliser around the base of the tree during planting and once per year thereafter in order to ensure adequate nutrition. Ensure the fertiliser contains high levels of nitrogen, as this will encourage healthy foliage growth which is essential for fruit production later on in life.

Watering:
Cherry trees require 1-2 inches of water per week during their first two growing seasons in order to develop deep roots that will help them to survive future dry periods. After the initial two years, cherry trees can usually get by with less frequent watering but still require enough moisture throughout the season for optimal fruit production, so it’s important to keep an eye on them during periods of drought or low rainfall.

When to plant your cherry tree?
Cherry trees should be planted in late winter or early spring when temperatures are consistently above freezing point. Depending on variety, mature cherry trees will start bearing fruit within three years after being planted however some may take up to five years before producing a sizeable crop each year.
